The person in charge of the case, Rafael Camarano, suggested that some passengers may have slept while others were awake.

Asked why they didn’t wake up or be warned, he said investigators were trying to work from the survivors’ statements.

He called it an “essential” part of the investigation.

Several bodies were found in a single cabin on a sunken boat at a press conference, and it wasn’t theirs.

Mr Cammarano said investigators do not currently know why they were found in the same room.

The head of the Palermo fire service, Bentivoglio Fiandra, said the boat capsized to the right and people tried to get to the other side, sheltering in cabins on the highest part of the wreck.

The ship was considered “unsinkable” by its manufacturer – the Italian shipyard Perini Navi.

According to Mr Kammarano, Bayesian was hit by a downspout, which are powerful winds from thunderstorms that spread quickly once they hit the ground.

Officials will inspect the safety equipment on board the sunken vessel.

Mr Cammarano was asked if there was a black box and if the chicks were left open.

He said that the investigators do not have the correct information about the black box and the first phase of investigation will look into it.

Another boat, the Sir Robert Bibby, was 150 to 200 meters from the Bayesian when severe weather struck.

The ship’s crew helped rescue 15 people on board.

Italian officials said how the explosion could affect a single vehicle and not other nearby ships.

Western Sicily’s maritime director, Rear Admiral Raffaele Macada, could not confirm how long it would take to recover the vessel from the sinking boat.

“Everything depends on the availability of the owners and the timeframe for the recovery of the wreck and of course everything that needs to be submitted to the port authorities and parallel the results of the investigation, which we will indeed do. The action can be approved,” he said.

“Like some experts who have already spoken on the matter, I can’t say it will take eight weeks.”

Although he could not estimate the figure, he clarified that the owners would bear the full cost of recovery.
