The Warriors successfully nabbed Buddy Hield despite interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, but who led Golden State’s sharpshooting guard’s successful bid?
Warriors coach Steve Kerr and assistant Chris DeMarco convinced Hield to join the winning Warriors, Athletics. Anthony Slater said on Wednesday.
DeMarco, who coaches the Bahamian national team, where the Hilde stars play, had been urging the eight-year veteran to join Golden State while the two were in Spain for Olympic qualifying.
While DeMarco worked hard to convince Hield to choose the Warriors, Slater’s report reveals a phone call with Kerr on Wednesday night pushed the decision to Thursday to get some sleep.
After deals with veteran forward Kyle Anderson and two-way guard D’Anthony Melton, the Warriors’ addition of Hield reflects a strong recovery from the gut-punch of Klay Thompson’s exit.
Demarco has been with the Warriors organization since 2012, working his way up from video coordinator to assistant coach.
While he’s been influential in helping shape a dynasty with his behind-the-scenes contributions, DeMarco’s efforts to land Hield won’t fly under the radar, especially if the sharpshooter has a role in helping Golden State return to NBA prominence.
