Here’s everything you need to know about Tuesday’s roll call.
What is different about this year’s roll call?
Rather than being the official number of delegates required to nominate members for the presidential ticket, this year’s roll call was ceremonial in nature.
That’s because Democrats sought to nominate Harris and Walls before Aug. 7, the original deadline for Ohio officials to get seats on the November ballot.
The Ohio Legislature passed a bill to change that deadline, with Democrats trying to avoid legal challenges to having their ticket on the ballot and instead opting for a virtual roll call, with delegates voting for Harris.
So while this year’s roll call had the traditional element of going state by state to announce support for Harris and Walls, it was only ceremonial in nature.
How did the roll call work?
With a few exceptions, the event continued largely in alphabetical order, with states pledging their delegates to the Harris-Wallace ticket.
57 representatives from all 50 states and US territories participated in the voice vote.
Do any states have special places in this order?
While traditional roll calls have the home state casting the final votes needed to secure a majority, this year the numbers went a little differently. President Joe Biden’s home state of Delaware received special mention, as did Walls’ Minnesota delegation and Harris’ California delegation.
