Olivia Munn has had a ‘total hysterectomy’ in her ongoing cancer battle, two months after revealing she had double mastitis.
The actress said last month that she underwent her fifth operation for breast cancer in an attempt to see her two-year-old son through childhood.
‘I have now had a total hysterectomy. I had my uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries taken out,’ Munn, 43, told Vogue in a profile for Mother’s Day.
‘Having a total hysterectomy was a big decision, but it was the best decision for me because I got to be there for my family.’
The Newsroom star, who is married to comedian John Mulaney, said she made the decision after being given a choice between having a hysterectomy and taking anti-hormonal drugs.
“I had a real panic,” he said.
‘A real breakdown. Because it’s so strange when you’ve been with this body all your life and you’ve had periods for a long time and you feel when you’re ovulating and suddenly it’s gone.
He was diagnosed in April last year, two months after he and his sister Sarah tested negative after a genetic analysis testing for 90 genes linked to cancer.
We called each other on the phone. That same winter I had a negative mammogram,’ she revealed in March this year.
‘Two months later I was diagnosed with breast cancer,’ she revealed.
‘The biopsies revealed that I had luminal B cancer in both breasts. Luminal B is an aggressive, fast-moving cancer.
‘Thirty days after that biopsy I had a double mastectomy. I felt completely fine one day and woke up in a hospital bed the next day after a 10-hour operation.
‘I’ve had four operations in the last ten months, been in bed for days I can’t even count, and learned more about cancer, cancer treatment and hormones than I ever imagined.’
She and Mulaney, 41, managed to create two ‘healthy embryos’ after her latest round of egg retrieval, but the hysterectomy means she can no longer carry children.
“It’s interesting because my 33-year-old eggs were fine. My 39-year-old eggs? None of them worked,” she said.
As you get older, you can eat large eggs one month and not so much the next. Clearly, the month we did in 39 was not a good month.
‘After my diagnosis we decided to try one more round of egg retrieval and hope it was a good month. ‘John and I have talked about it a lot, I don’t think we’re done growing our family, but I don’t know if I should do chemotherapy or radiation.’
She revealed on Instagram last week that the former Daily Show reporter was on her feet for a few weeks following her recent surgery before spraining her ankle.
She shared a brief video of herself in light blue short shorts and a matching shirt with a black brace on her left ankle.
The video – themed Curb Your Enthusiasm – shows her zooming in on her ankle, first teasing that she’s injured herself in a very serious way.
‘Today I sprained my ankle jumping out of a plane. And by plane means I miss CVS parking,’ she told her followers.
Son Malcolm, 2, said he worried about the impact of his illness on his family before sharing it with Mulaney.
Friends tried to cheer me up saying ‘Malcolm is not going to remember this’. Don’t worry,” she said.
But I thought to myself, ‘I’ve missed all this.’
‘It’s his childhood, but it’s my motherhood, and I don’t want to lose any of these parts.’
