After years of hopes and months of rumors, Nintendo is finally making a live-action Legend of Zelda movie.
This news was shared today In an official post For Nintendo investors, with some details. The film is being produced by Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Arad Productions president and former Marvel Studios founder and CEO Avi Arad.
Arad gained fame as a producer on several successful films over the years, including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Into the Spider-Verse, No Way Home, Far from Home and Homecoming. He has also worked on upcoming films including Kraven the Hunter and Borderlands.
Maze Runner director Wes Paul is set to direct, and Sony Pictures Entertainment will co-finance the film with Nintendo and handle theatrical distribution.
Although the press release indicated that development is just beginning, Miyamoto noted in a Tweet/X post today that the project has been in the works in some form for “years now.”

However, unlike the Mario movie, the Zelda movie is live-action, which means playing the characters of Link, Zelda, Kanon and others takes on a whole new dimension. The Super Mario Bros. movie, while well-received, was met with pre-release criticism over its decision to cast Chris Pratt as Mario, and the Zelda movie will be subject to similar fan scrutiny — even though Link is a silent protagonist, as in the games.
