Shelia Jackson Lee, a longtime congresswoman for the Texas Democratic Party, has died. She is 74 years old.
Lee’s family released a statement on X announcing the following:
“Today, with incredible sadness at our loss, but deep gratitude for the life she shared with us, we announce the passing of Sheila Jackson Lee, U.S. Representative for the 18th Congressional District of Texas. A fierce champion of people, she was kind and simple. Her omnipresent presence for more than 30 years and their everyday lives Known as “Congress Woman” by her constituents in recognition of her lifetime of service.
Lee announced his diagnosis in June Pancreatic cancer.
A Report issued to X In June, Lee said her doctors had confirmed pancreatic cancer and she was being treated.
“I believe my doctors have developed the best plan to target my specific disease,” Lee said in the statement. “The road ahead will not be easy, but I stand with faith that God will strengthen me.”
Jackson Lee has represented Texas’ 18th District in the House of Representatives since 1995. Now in his 15th term in Congress, Jackson Lee is a member of the House Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget Committees and the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.
In his statement, Jackson Lee made no mention of stepping down, instead writing that he is “committed to working with the leadership of our Congress, including President Hakeem Jeffries and the Speaker of the House, to serve this country and attend a vote on important legislation.” For the Prosperity and Security of the American People.”
